RETNA (Marquis Duriel Lewis) is a Los Angeles-based artist known internationally for his unique style of abstracted letterforms. Each block of text is a sophisticated system of hieroglyphs, calligraphy and illuminated script. With influences from Arabic, Egyptian, Hebrew, Anglo-Saxon and Native American typographies, RETNA’s distinctive language communicates a personal form of poetry. As the artist elucidates: “I want my text to feel universal. I want people from different cultures to all find some similarity in it—whether they can read it or not.” In addition to his celebrated public murals and collaborations with high-profile brands and musicians, RETNA’s work has been shown in galleries and major art institutions across the globe.
