Oscar Joyo: Headspace Prints

Oscar Joyo's practice extends the lineage of Afro-futurism. Grounded in his extensive training in technical drawing and portraiture at the American Academy of Art, his otherworldly and austere portraits are blanketed with patterns rooted in tribal markings rendered with quality of line reminiscent of early street art. The material rawness of the foundational elements of Joyo’s paintings are belied by the finish-fetish slickness of the works’ surfaces; in turn the weight and depth of the traditions Joyo engages with are balanced by a distinctively radiant club-kid energy.

Joyo’s latest bodies of work allow viewers to enter their interstitial physical and conceptual spaces through the application of augmented reality, establishing new modes of viewership.
