Mondo Marie (American, b. 1981)
Mando Marie (pseudonym of Portugal-based American painter Amanda Marie) is known for her hauntingly nostalgic collages. Incorporating stencil work and hand finishing with collage elements that frequently include remnants of vintage sewing patterns, wallpaper, and storybooks, these works balance pattern-heavy materials against a muted color palette, giving play to subtle and complex compositional interventions. Marie’s recurring depictions of children (whether isolated or doubled in a twin-like fashion) show saturnine faces, tapping into innate psychological spaces that address apprehension around uncertainties of the future, faded memories of a fondly-remembered past, and the loss of innocence.
