A Message To Our Community

In light of the uncertainty regarding COVID-19, we want to share an update on the safeguards we are undertaking to protect our artists and our community at this time.

Effective immediately, Line Dot will be open by appointment only between the hours of 11am to 6pm on Tuesday through Saturday. This will continue through Tuesday, April 7th, and may be extended longer should conditions warrant it. To schedule an appointment please call +1.773.219.0968 or email hello@linedoteditions.com.

Sadly, we have made the decision to cancel our opening reception scheduled for Friday, March 27th for Vivian Le's 'Participation is Part of your Grade'. We are still releasing Vivian's amazing new drawings online, so email us for the Collector's Preview. Also, we intend to do a closing reception for this show if the current situation has mitigated enough to allow for a social gathering.

The print release for “Cheap Thrills” by Kayla Mahaffey on Saturday, March 21st is still happening, but it will be online only. Please do not come to the gallery to try to purchase these prints in person.

Despite the new protocol, Line Dot will otherwise maintain standard gallery operations. We will continue to release new collections from our artists. Artwork is still available for pick up, and can be purchased online and shipped to you by visiting www.linedoteditions.com.

We appreciate your support and understanding, and look forward to seeing you again soon!

Sending you all our best from Chicago.

Vivian Le: Participation Is Part Of Your Grade

Opening Online Friday, March 27th

Line Dot is thrilled to present ‘Participation is Part of Your Grade’, a collection of new drawings exploring the theme of memories related to attending school, by Chicago based artist Vivian Le.

For this release, Le has created a series of playful, surreal, 11”x14” graphite drawings on paper featuring school children described by the artist as “kawaii (cute) macabre”. The works portray imagery in rich, vibrant, pink pastel hues typically associated as being favorite colors of young girls. Her characters, which are often school age children or doll figures embodying the shape of young children, are used by Le to explore the influence of the adult gaze and respond to the ways in which children have been used historically as romantic symbols.

Le explains that her inspiration is drawn from many sources including illustrated works she explored as a young child, her daydreams and a consideration of the unconscious influence and performative quality of gender taught from generation to generation. The artist further comments that her drawings should be considered “fragments of storybooks” and that they are intended to express an implied narrative. Despite it’s somewhat onerous underlying themes, Le’s work is simultaneously charming and challenging; a compelling duality that invites deeper consideration from the viewer both visually and conceptually.

Vivian Le is a Chicago based illustrator and painter. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2014. Her work has been featured in numerous publications and has been exhibited nationally including Portland, OR and Miami, FL. Further information may be found on vivianleart.com or on Instagram @levivianart.

'Participation is Part of Your Grade' runs through May 1st and is available to view in the gallery by appointment.

Sean Hannaway: NOW WITH MORE EXTRA!

Opening Reception Friday, February 7th 6-9pm

Line Dot is thrilled to present Sean Hannaway’s first solo show: ‘NOW WITH MORE EXTRA!' featuring a new collection of original paintings on reclaimed rococo-style mirrors. Come join us for drinks with the artist at the opening reception next Friday, February 7th from 6-9pm.

Sean Hannaway is a Chicago born-and-based painter known for his punchy, densely layered style that blends high Renaissance subjects and graffiti aesthetics. The push and pull between his techniques, colors, and influences creates a dynamic tension in his work. A cheeky sense of humor pervades his practice, and is manifest in his use of plastic framed rococo-style mirrors from the 1960s as his canvases. Once obscured by layers of paint, the forms of the mirrors lose their gilded, gaudy essence and become graceful curves and flourishes that seamlessly blend into the final painting. Hannaway daylights as a Creative Director at Leo Burnett and has been featured in three previous shows at Line Dot, all of which sold out.

'NOW WITH MORE EXTRA!' runs through March 7th.

Booth F15 December 3rd - 8th

Line Dot is thrilled to bring three of Chicago's biggest talents to this year's SCOPE Miami Beach: Max Sansing, Kayla Mahaffey and Steve Seeley. With technical mastery, each of these artists wield acrylic, oil and spray paint to externalize their own inner worlds. Replete with fantastical landscapes, hellacious villains, and unlikely superheroes, the fully-developed worlds presented in these works are both deeply personal and reflective of larger cultural dynamics, drawing on shared references from comic books to afrofuturism, cartoons to Shakespeare.

ANTHONY LISTER

Unique Hand-Embellished Screen Prints

Just in at Line Dot: a new, exclusive edition of hand-embellished prints from Anthony Lister. These mixed media works on paper explore the theme of female super-villains, and capture the aesthetic magic and frenetic energy of Lister's coveted multi-thousand dollar paintings on canvas.

An early pioneer of the street art movement in Brisbane, Lister is now one of Australia’s most renowned contemporary artists. High and low culture clash in the subject and style of his paintings, resulting in provocative works that are often equally perverse and alluring. This duality is amplified by Lister’s distinct aesthetic: a synthesis of a sophisticated, painterly approach with the grit and exuberance of street art.

Lister’s global art practice encompasses a variety of media from painting and drawing to film and music. His work has been exhibited in major cities around the world and acquired by prominent art institutions including the National Gallery of Australia.
